WMP will not connect to the internet
Hello everyone,

This is a new problem. Started maybe in the last 2 weeks.
Windows media player (any version) won't recognise the internet connection.

I think the problem began when we converted from Iprimus to Telstra Bigpond as our ISP 3 weeks ago.

I tried reinstalling WMP and installing the latest version 11, but it won't fix the problem.
I am using XP operating system and have googled the issue countless times.
I assume formatting my hard drive would rectify?
but I guess if the new internet connection is causing the issue maybe a format would not help.

I would really appreciate a solution as I can't vew any wmv files ebmbedded onto websites.
and if I click on 'online stores' it tells me I'm offline, but 'work offline' is not selected, and in the menu 'connect to internet' is ticked

Re: WMP will not connect to the internet
Are you using some firewall which is not allowing wmplayer to connect to the internet?? it is possible that by default your firewall has disabled access to the wmplayer. Also try updating with any updates available for windows instead of straightaway formatting. Keep that as the last option. I dont see any reason for your isp to block wmplayer out of all the services.

Re: WMP will not connect to the internet
Hi you are facing this problem either due to the new internet connection or your windows media player have been damaged. Sometimes if the internet connection does not work properly the WMP is unable to connect to the internet. I have also faced similar kind of problem in the past because my internet connection was not working properly at that time.

Re: WMP will not connect to the internet
I've finished formatting now.
I'm a firm believer that formats should be done every 6 months anyways for optimum performance (I keep everything on external hard drives)
and now its all working fine

its a frustrating issue but i was probably due for a format anyways

I was running WMP9, which to be honest is my preffered version...
I installed 10 - did not fix problem
I installed 11, did not fix problem

so maybe there was something wrong with the internet connection but im back online now and its all good

im being careful though andprior to installing anything doing a system restore.. just incase
